10-Minute Pineapple Salsa Recipe (2)

Fresh, tropical pineapple is one of those foods that makes your mouth water. Sweet with a bit of tang. Paired with tomatoes, onion, garlic, and jalapeño peppers, it really shines.

Pineapple - fresh ripe pineapple is best.
Tomatoes - we like the taste and texture of Roma tomatoes, but other firm varieties will work.
Red Onion - is our favorite, but a sweet onion is a nice alternative.
Cilantro - finely chopped. You can substitute fresh parsley if you like.
Fresh Garlic- minced. This gives the recipe a kick of flavor.
Jalapeño Pepper - gives the recipe its kick and is optional if you want to leave it out.
Lime Juice - freshly squeezed if you have it. However, bottled lime juice will work in a pinch.
Salt and Pepper - to taste.

How To Make Pineapple Salsa From Scratch - Step By Step

This Pineapple Jalapeno Salsa recipe is pretty darn simple to make; no special kitchen skills are required! If you leave out the jalapeño pepper, it's very family-friendly.

Of course, we’re going under the assumption you have enough fresh, ripe pineapple, and no one around your house got to it first!

Step 1 - Chop Ingredients

First, wash and then dice up your pineapple, tomatoes, cilantro, red onion, and jalapeño.

Pro Tip: For ease, use a garlic press to mince the fresh garlic.

Step 2 - Mix Ingredients

Now, in a large mixing bowl, combine chopped pineapple, tomatoes, cilantro, red onion, garlic, and jalapeños. Drizzle with lime juice and toss to coat evenly.

Pro Tip: When using freshly squeezed lime juice, warm the limes in the microwave for 15-20 seconds to get the most juice out of them.

See, totally simple!

Tips & Tricks

  • Due to the high water content, we don't recommend frozen or canned pineapple.
  • Fresh Pineapple Salsa will keep in the refrigerator for about 5 days. However, it will become more watery the longer it's left.
  • This recipe is a great make-ahead. You can prepare it in advance, refrigerate, and bring it out when ready to serve. We prefer it the next day.
  • Make any necessary flavor tweaks based on personal preference—for example, more salt or adding a pinch of sugar if you want your salsa slightly sweeter.
  • If you're not a fan of cilantro, some readers substitute fresh parsley, or you can leave it out.

Serving Tip

If you're looking to use the rest of your pineapple, start by cutting it lengthwise, just to the side of the top, and hollowing it out to be used as a serving bowl.

Perfect for wowing guests and saving on dishwashing!

What to Serve with Your Salsa

Of course, you can use pineapple salsa as a dip with tortilla chips or corn chips, but there are many other ways to use it!

Use your salsa on:

  • Grilled meat like chicken, beef, or fish.
  • Mixed in with brown rice.
  • Incredible and easy Chicken Fajitas.
  • It’s also incredible on pulled pork tacos or whatever kind of tacos you like!
  • Top your Chicken Tostadas with it!

What Else Can I add to Pineapple Salsa?

Try adding diced mangos, diced cucumbers, diced red bell pepper, black beans, diced sweet onions (instead of red onion), avocado, diced green onions, or even corn.

If you like your salsa really spicy, try habanero peppers instead of jalapeño peppers. Just dice them very small.

How to Tell if Your Pineapple is Ripe?

  • You should be able to smell the distinctive sweet pineapple smell when you put your nose close to the bottom of the fruit.
  • The pineapple should “give” slightly when squeezed gently but not have any mushy spots.
  • It should also have nice green leaves.

Pro Tip: In a hurry? No worries! Buy pre-cut fresh pineapple from the produce department at the grocery store and dice it up yourself. It’s more expensive this way, but a lot faster.
