101 Dalmatians is a Disney media franchise adapted from Dodie Smith's children's novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians, that began in 1961 with the Disney animated film One Hundred and One Dalmatians, note although it didn't truly pick up as an actual franchise until The '90s when a live-action remake was released.

It mainly focuses on an extended family of two Dalmatian dogs, Pongo and Perdita, and their 99 Dalmatian puppies (born to and adopted) living in London with their human "pets" Roger and Anita Radcliffe (or Dearly depending on the work). However, the franchise is probably best known for its main villainess, Cruella de Vil, a wealthy fashionista who wants to skin the puppies for a spotted fur coat. "Cruella De Vil" also happens to be the title of a famously catchy song about her.

Works in the franchise include:

Feature films

  • 101 Dalmatiansnote (1961): Pongo and Perdita meet, mate, and give birth to fifteen dalmatian puppies, who would later get kidnapped by Cruella and her henchmen, Horace and Jasper. The two dalmatian parents go out to rescue them, only to find that they also need to rescue 84 other pups as well.
    • 101 Dalmatians II: Patch's London Adventure (2003): A direct-to-video animated sequel to the 1961 original. One of the dalmatian puppies, Patch, feels ignored as his family prepares to move to the countryside. When he is accidentally left behind on moving day, he goes to see his television hero, Thunderbolt, who is set to be killed off from his show the next episode. The two dogs work together to help the latter stay on his show and eventually to save the dalmatian puppies from being taken by Cruella again.
  • 101 Dalmatians (1996): The live-action remake of the 1961 film, well before Disney's current trend of theatrical live-action remakes. It starts Glenn Close as Cruella, is updated to the then-present day of the 1990s, and the animal characters do not speak this time.
    • 102 Dalmatians (2000): The sequel to the 1996 live-action film, again starring Close. Cruella is hypnotized into loving puppies and hating fur coats, and now works for a struggling animal shelter under probation. Big Ben's chimes break her out of her trance, however, and she and a French fur coat lover named Le Pelt are looking to use 102 dalmatian puppies to make a fur coat (the 102nd one was born albino, without a single spot, so she wants to make a hood out of it).
  • Cruella (2021): An Alternate Continuity origin story of the villainess, starring Emma Stone as a younger Cruella during the 1970s, but with Glenn Close executive producing.
    • Cruella 2 (TBA): A sequel to the above, again featuring Stone as Cruella.

  • Cruella: The Manga: Black, White, and Red (2021): An adaptation of Cruella.

Comic Book

  • Cruella De Vil (2023): A series starring Cruella de Vil as part of the Disney Villains line.

Literature

  • The Lucky Puppy (1960): A Short Story about Lucky.
  • Disney Villains: The Top Secret Files (2005): A book that delves into the backstories of various Disney villains. Cruella De Vil has her own file.
  • Cruella: Hello, Cruel Heart (2021): A prequel novel to Cruella.

Television series

  • 101 Dalmatians: The Series (1997–1998): A 65-Episode Cartoon that spawned from the live-action remake's success. Takes place in a semi-Alternate Continuity where the Dearlys and the Dalmatians move to a farm. It mainly focuses on the misadventures of three puppies and a spotted chicken friend of theirs.
  • 101 Dalmatian Street (2019–2020): An animated series that takes place in 21st century London that focuses on the Descendants of Pongo and Perdita, with Dalmatians whose names all begin with the letter 'D'.

Video games

  • Disney's Animated Storybook: 101 Dalmatians (1997): A point-and-click edutainment game for Windows and Macintosh computers serving as the sixth entry in that series. Primarily made to promote the live-action film, it is an interactive abridged retelling of the original animated film, but with some elements updated to match up with 1990s technology.
  • 101 Dalmatians: Escape from DeVil Manor (1997): Another Point-and-Click Game, two dalmatian puppies must find a way out of Cruella De Vil's mansion and head back to London.
  • 102 Dalmatians: Puppies to the Rescue (2000): Two platform games—a 3D game for Windows, PlayStation, and Dreamcast, and a 2D game for Game Boy Color—based on the live-action sequel, but styled after the animated classic. Two dalmatian puppies, Oddball and Domino, must rescue their parents and siblings from Cruella, who plans to make realistic animal toys out of them.
