Why are my pocket diapers leaking? ›

If you notice cloth diaper leaks, adjust to a tighter setting, particularly around the thighs. In some cases, your insert may have become bunched up in between the legs, which can cause leaks. Ensure your inserts lay flat when you insert them into the pocket after washing.

If you choose to use a pocket diaper as a cover to eliminate the extra step of stuffing them with inserts, you may simply fold a flat or a prefold on top of the shell or pin the diaper on your baby first before fastening the pocket diaper over top.

Whether you wash them yourself or use a diaper service, it takes a lot of water and energy resources to keep a clean supply on hand. Compared with disposables, cloth diapers are more prone to leaks.

Pocket Diapers also need to be fully changed with every diaper change- meaning you need to replace the pocket diaper and insert with every diaper change. Diaper Covers however can be wiped clean on the inside (unless soiled), and you would only need to swap out the insert/flat/prefold with a clean one.

Synthetic Fabric Diapers

Yes you need to pre-wash them once. If you have purchased covers, pocket style, all in two or all in one type diapers made with synthetic fabrics like microfleece, microfiber, micro-suede or athletic wicking jersey, you need only wash once with detergent and dry them before use.

Stripping is an extreme process used to correct months or years of improper washing, not something you do just for fun. If your diapers are clean out of the wash, there is no need to strip. It is generally not necessary to strip pocket shells or PUL covers, as they have no absorbent parts.

The absorbent insert is placed between the polyester fabric and the lining in a pocket style opening. Pocket diapers are designed to be cool, breathable, and comfortable for both babies and toddlers. Using cloth diapers for overnight periods is certainly possible. But longer sleeps naturally require a little extra protection. Overnight cloth diapers may leak if they become fully saturated. There is no need to look for special nighttime cloth diapers for overnight periods.

Not Enough Absorbency

If the insert is soaked and the diaper is leaking, you may need to add more absorbency. Add another insert and see if you solve the leaking problem.

The main difference between them is the presence or absence of a lining that creates a pocket for inserts. Pocket diapers have a stay-dry lining that wicks away moisture from your baby's skin, while diaper covers do not have any lining and need to be used with other absorbent diapers.

Can you only use it once before washing? If the fleece gets wet, then the pocket shell can't be re-used. But if you do frequent changes, and only the diaper is wet, then you can re-use the cover. Even though fleece is a “stay dry” fabric, you can tell when it's wet by touch.

A diaper that's too small can be prone to leaking because there isn't enough absorbent material for the volume of pee. If your baby is reaching the upper end of the weight range for the diaper size they are currently wearing, it is probably time to move to the next size.
