My business already uses the Maine Tax Portal, but for taxes that I don’t handle. Do I need to create another username to use it for the taxes I work with?

Yes, another username is needed as every individual accessing the accounts should have their own username and password; passwords should not be shared. You can create another username using the instructions to Create a Username and then set up access for the tax accounts you need to work with.
It is also possible for one user to create Secondary Logons; a Secondary Logon is a username issued to another individual via email, but the access can be restricted by the issuer. This is most used when someone in a supervisory capacity needs to allow another individual within the company access to file or make payments for a specific tax or taxes.

Maine Tax Portal Account Access Overview

Web access for web logons

Security in the Maine Tax Portal is handled by specifying the web access for web logons. There are two different methods for specifying the level of access a web logon has:

  • Access type: Controls the actions a user can take when they are managing their profile and submitting customer-level web requests
  • Access level: Controls the actions a user can take when they are managing their account, a filing period, or submitting account- and period-level requests on behalf of other users

Access types

An access type is associated with a web logon in two different ways:

  • Access type for the web logon itself: This mainly applies to logon-level requests and access management
  • Access type for a specific customer: Controls the actions a user can take when they are managing their account, a filing period, or submitting account- and period-level requests on behalf of other users

MTP has three access types:

  • Master (Full Access): This is the primary access type for a customer; typically, there is only one Master logon for a customer. The first customer to establish credentials on the MTP for a given FEIN/SSN will be given the “Master” privileges for that taxpayer. Masters have the highest level of access for access management. These logons can also create new logons and cease existing logons
  • Administrator: Administrators have nearly the same access as Masters. They can create new logons, cease existing logons, and change access for other logons, though they are not able to cease Masters. By default, Administrators only have access to accounts given to them by Masters or other Administrators
  • User: This access type has a limited set of access. A User may be able to submit basic requests, but they cannot see or manage access for other logons

Access types

An access type is associated with a web logon in two different ways:

  • File Returns: File returns for the specified account(s)
  • Make Payments: Make payments for the specified account(s)
  • File and Pay: File returns and make payments for the specified account(s)
