Introduction
Some states in the US are considered more conservative than others, based on data gathered by Gallup, where people self-identify as more or less liberal or conservative, or moderate. The difference between liberal identification and conservative identification is that liberals tend to prioritize individual liberties, social justice, and governmental intervention, while conservatives prioritize individual responsibility, traditional values, and free-market economics. The data from the Gallup poll shows that conservative identification has been more prevalent in the US in recent years.
In general, the states that tend to vote for Republicans in presidential elections are considered “red states,” while those that tend to vote for Democrats are considered “blue states.” Red states tend to have more conservative values, such as a focus on individual responsibility, a preference for smaller government, and a pro-life stance on abortion. However, it’s important to note that the values of conservatives and Republicans are not always aligned. Someone can be a Republican and still have some liberal values, and vice versa.

Most Conservative States
The most conservative states in the US are Mississippi, Alabama, Wyoming, West Virginia, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, South Carolina, Utah, South Carolina, Oklahoma, North Dakota, North Carolina, Mississippi, Missouri, Kentucky, Alaska, Idaho, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Montana, and North Dakota. These states all have a self-identification rate of over 39% for conservatives, and self-identify as ‘highly conservative’ (as opposed to ‘conservative’, ‘moderate’, ‘liberal’, or ‘highly liberal’). Most of these states are red states, meaning they tend to vote Republican in presidential elections. Mississippi has the highest rate of conservative identification, with 50% of its population self-identifying as conservative and only 12% identifying as liberal.
What these states have in common is a focus on traditional values and individual responsibility. Many of these states have conservative policies when it comes to social issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage. They also tend to support gun rights and limited government intervention in people’s lives. While these states are considered to be conservative, they are not all completely hom*ogenous in their values. For example, Arizona is a swing state that voted for Biden in the 2020 presidential election.
