West Bloomfield restaurant inspections: Dirty microwave, exposed food found (2024)

Across various establishments in West Bloomfield between January and March, inspectors found several restaurants that were not compliant with the Oakland County Health Department's food safety code.

Many of the violations have been corrected, and the presence of violations in a past inspection report doesn't necessarily mean the establishment has the same violations today.

Golden Phoenix Restaurant, 6257 Orchard Lake Rd

During a routine inspection on Jan. 2, an inspector noted several problems at Golden Phoenix Restaurant.

  • Employee children's motrin and tylenol was stored directly above customer food in the standing server cooler. Move and store the noted medicine below and away from all food, equipment, utensils, linens, and single-service and single-use articles.
  • Employee food was stored directly above customer food (a) in the dry storage area, and (b) in the walk-in cooler. Employee beverages were stored directly above (a) clean utensils on the cookline counter, and (b) clean equipment on the prep table. Move and store the noted employee food and beverages below and away from all exposed food; clean equipment, utensils, and linens; and unwrapped single-service and single-use articles.
  • The interior of the microwave near the wok table was soiled with food build-up. Clean the interior of the microwave and maintain it clean.
  • The floor under the fryers was soiled with grease build-up. Clean the noted area of the floor and maintain it clean.
  • Two severely dented cans were stored among wholesome cans in the dry storage area. Discard the noted cans, or store them in a separate are to be returned to the supplier.
  • Two severely chipped rubber spatulas were stored among clean utensils in the ware washing area. Discard the noted utensils.

Don Juan Mexican Restaurant, 6203 Orchard Lake Rd

During a routine inspection on Feb. 5, an inspector noted several problems at Don Juan.

  • An employee was working with exposed food on the cookline without wearing a hair restraint. An employee was working with clean utensils in the ware washing area without wearing a hair restraint. Provide the noted employees with a hair restraint and ensure it is worn while handling exposed food; clean equipment, utensils, and linens; and unwrapped single-service and single-use articles.
  • A cup was located inside the floor drain for the soda machine ice bin in the server area, causing there to be no air gap between the end of the noted drain line and the flood rim level of the floor drain. Remove the cup to provide an air gap of at least one inch between the end of the noted drain line and the flood rim level of the floor drain.
  • Garnishes on the bar counter were left uncovered. The ice inside the ice bin (a) inside the bar, and (b) on the outer side of the bar, was left uncovered. Cover the noted food to protect from possible contamination.
  • Three portions of tortilla shells were stored directly inside grocery bags on the cookline. Remove the food from the noted bags and store them in an approved food container.
  • There was no hand soap available at the hand washing sink near the walk-in cooler. Provide the noted hand washing sink with hand soap.
  • The cookline hand washing sink was leaking water from underneath the basin when in use. Repair the noted hand washing sink to eliminate the leak.
  • Multiple gaps were located between hood vent filters in the middle and right section of the cookline above cooking equipment. Re-adjust the noted hood vent filters, or install additional spacers or filters to eliminate the gaps above the noted cooking equipment.

Naples Pizza, 2071 Hiller Rd

During a routine inspection on Jan. 9, an inspector noted several problems at Naples Pizza.

  • The person in charge handled a ready-to-eat italian sub sandwich with their bare hands. They had washed their hands prior to contacting the sandwich. Cease contacting ready-to-eat food with bare hands, and use single-use gloves, or other suitable utensils, to handle ready-to-eat food in the future.
  • There was no paper towel available at the hand washing sink in the employee restroom. Provide the noted hand washing sink with paper towel.
  • The person in charge was preparing exposed food without wearing a hair restraint. Wear a hair restraint while handling exposed food; clean equipment, utensils, and linens; and unwrapped single-service and single-use articles.
  • The self closer for the employee restroom door was detached. Repair the noted self closer so that the employee restroom door is self-closing.
  • One package of salami in the right top loading cooler was held past the manufacturer's use-by date of 1/03/24. One package of baby spinach in the right top loading cooler was held past the manufacturer's use-by date of 12/21/23. Discard the noted food.

Allegro, 7325 Orchard Lake Rd

During a routine inspection on Jan. 25, an inspector noted several problems at Allegro.

  • The person in charge handled raw meat, then a wiping cloth containing sanitizer, and rinsed their hands in water with their gloves on prior to handling clean equipment. Remove gloves and wash hands after contamination, prior to handling food or clean equipment.
  • The person in charge was preparing food without wearing a hair restraint. Wear a hair restraint while handling exposed food; clean equipment, utensils, and linens; and unwrapped single-service and single-use articles.
  • Portions of floor tile were missing in front of the standing freezer near the back door. Repair the noted floor tiles.
  • The dish machine was providing a Chlorine sanitizer solution at a concentration less than 10ppm, per test paper. The sanitizer bucket connected to the machine was clear in color. Repair the noted dish machine, or replace the sanitizer container, so the machines provides a Chlorine sanitizer solution at a concentration of 50-100ppm. Use the three-compartment sink to clean and sanitize all food-contact surfaces until it is functioning properly.

Meer Kitchen, 6760 W Maple Rd

During a routine inspection on Jan. 31, an inspector noted several problems at Meer Kitchen.

  • The toilet in the men's employee restroom was leaking water from the underside of the tank. Repair the noted toilet to eliminate the leak.
  • The hand washing sink in the women's employee restroom was no longer fully sealed to the adjoining wall. Seal the noted sink to the adjoining wall.
  • Multiple boxes of food were store directly on the floor inside (1) walk-in freezer #1 and (2) walk-in freezer #2. Move and store the noted boxes of food on a clean, dry surface at least six inches above the floor.

Bobbie Ques Rib Chicken and Jamaican Cuisine, 7412 Haggerty Rd

During a routine inspection on Feb. 23, an inspector noted several problems at Bobbie Ques.

  • Employee food was stored directly above, and next to, customer food in the walk-in cooler. Move and store the noted employee food below and away from all food; clean equipment, utensils, and linens; and unwrapped single-service and single-use articles.
  • The front hand washing sink was not fully sealed to the adjoining wall. Fully seal the noted sink to the adjoining wall.
  • The label on the facility-made Ginger Beer juice stored in bottles in the front counter cooler only included the name of the product and the facility name. The product does not container any major food allergens. Provide the bottle juices with a label including all of the above noted items.
  • Facility-made Ginger Beer juice stored in bottles in the front counter cooler did not have a warning label that it is unpasteurized. Label the noted bottled juice with the above noted warning label.

Benitos Pizza, 33370 W 14 Mile Rd

During a routine inspection on Feb. 7, an inspector noted several problems at Benitos Pizza.

  • A portion of the grease trap of the three-compartment sink was left uncovered, causing that portion of the floor to have a deep hole in it. Provide a cover for the noted portion of the grease trap to eliminate the hole in the floor.
  • There was no unit thermometer located inside the standing Pepsi cooler used to store sauces. Provide the noted cooler with an internal unit thermometer.
  • There was no paper towel available at the hand washing sink in the employee restroom. Provide the noted hand washing sink with paper towel.
  • Par-cooked chicken wings weer 67F cooling at room temperature on the prep table for 3 hours, per person in charge. Use above approved cooling methods to rapidly cool the noted food to 41F or less within the remaining three hours.
  • One container of roasted red peppers labeled with an open date of 1/29/24 was held for more than seven days in the makeline cooler. Discard the noted food.
  • Pizza sauce was 60F stored on the makeline counter for 3 hours, per person in charge. Garlic spread labeled keep refrigerated was 67F for 3 hours on the carryout counter for 3 hours, per person in charge. Rapidly cool the noted food to 41F or less within one hour.
