FAQs

Why are rabbit hutches bad? ›

In a small hutch her body fills the whole living area. She certainly can't stretch and run freely, and there is nothing in here to keep her occupied. In reality, all she can do is sit. Rabbits need to run, jump, stretch up, dig and forage – it's cruel to keep a rabbit alone and in a hutch.

Why should rabbits not live in hutches? ›

Using cages or hutches as a main, or only living space is CRUEL; Even the eye catching 'larger double tiered' hutches and cages offer no real living space for Rabbits. Rabbits are by nature highly active, inquisitive, clean animals & are most active in the mornings & evenings.

Is it OK to buy second hand rabbit hutch? ›

Second-hand rabbit housing

If you get a second-hand hutch, please scrub it out thoroughly with a recommended pet-friendly cleaner. You will need to do this a few days before your rabbits arrive with you so that the wood can dry properly before your rabbits use it.

What size hutch do I need for 2 rabbits? ›

10ft x 6ft x 3ft/3m x 2m x 1m is the absolute minimum recommended space for a pair of rabbits, but we recommend providing much more than this. As a bare minimum it's really important that your rabbits living space is large and tall enough for them to: Run around. Jump as high as they want.

Should you cover a rabbit hutch at night? ›

In the daytime, keep the front of the hutch uncovered for ventilation purposes. It is fine to cover more of the hutch during the night but you should still leave a small area open for ventilation. Add extra bedding for your bunny to snuggle into. This can be lined underneath with newspaper for increased insulation.

Is it okay to leave a rabbit in a cage all day? ›

As a general rule of thumb, rabbits should not be kept in their cages for more than 4 hours at a stretch during the day. They should be allowed out of their cages for at least 3-4 hours each day for exercise and social interaction.

Can rabbits sleep outside in a hutch? ›

Rabbits can be kept outdoors all year round but ideally their resting area should be brought into a shed or unused garage with natural light and ventilation for the winter months or else protected with tarpaulin from bad weather. Also, an exercise run should always be available.

Can rabbits stay in hutch in winter? ›

If the temperature starts to reach freezing, you may wish to consider moving your rabbits' home indoors or into an outhouse, shed or unused garage. If you do, you must ensure they still have plenty of space to exercise freely and are not going to be confined simply to a hutch with no exercise area.

Is it cruel to keep a rabbit indoors? ›

Both indoor and outdoor rabbits can have happy, healthy lives so it's up to you and your bunny pals to decide whether inside or outside is best for them (or maybe even a combination of both!).

What is the downside of owning a rabbit? ›

Drawbacks/Misconceptions of Rabbit ownership

Bunnies can be destructive if they do not get enough mental enrichment and owners should take care to bunny-proof their home to avoid chewing on wires and furniture.

Can 2 rabbits be left alone? ›

Rabbits can be left alone together safely once they're showing positive behaviours towards one another. Always speak to your vet for more detailed advice before attempting to bond rabbits. Be aware of the signs of positive and negative behaviour, and if you're concerned about your rabbit's behaviour, ask your vet.

Do you need 2 litter boxes for 2 rabbits? ›

If you have a pair of bunnies sharing the same litter box, you'll want to get one very large box, or give the bunnies multiple boxes to keep them well supplied with hay and fresh litter. We recommend using CareFresh and fresh hay to prepare your bunny's litter box.

What do rabbits like to sleep on? ›

Soft, fresh straw is comfortable bedding for your rabbit. Straw can help absorb pee in the cage, keeping the cage much cleaner and drier. Because straw works as an insulator, absorbent, and soft bedding material, it can also be used as a great rabbit nesting material.

How many rabbits should live together? ›

Keeping rabbits together

Keep your rabbit with at least one other friendly rabbit, unless you're advised otherwise by a vet or qualified animal behaviourist. A good combination is a neutered male and neutered female, as neutering reduces the likelihood of fighting in both sexes.

What is the best bedding for indoor rabbits? ›

The best option for safe rabbit cage bedding

Is paper bedding combined with some dust extracted bedding hay for the ultimate in cleanliness and comfort, to help your rabbits enjoy the cosiest naptimes. Although you can use an old newspaper as a rabbit cage liner, it's not ideal as bunny bedding or bunny litter.

Is a hutch or cage better for a rabbit? ›

One significant advantage of using a rabbit hutch is that they are spacious. A larger exercise area lets bunnies stretch, hop and play freely – important behaviours for their well-being. Hutches are also ideal if you have more than one bunny because there's enough cage space for each rabbit to claim its own territory.

Is it cruel to have a house rabbit? ›

Ideally, a rabbit needs space to run and hop. Keeping them in a cage is unkind. So if you need to make that space inside, rabbitproof your house just as you would for an adventurous toddler. Finally, they are great pets if you care for them properly and give them an interesting but proper diet.

Do rabbit hutches attract rats? ›

Not a comprehensive answer, but an important one: the rats are attracted to bunny poo (they think it's yummy); keep the hutch area clean! When we raised rabbits when I was a kid, we quickly discovered that we had created a huge rat problem, and that they were attracted to the droppings under the hutch.
